As an artist, I explore the inner landscapes of being human.. the space between the seen and the felt, certainty and mystery, autonomy and belonging. I am fascinated by the contradictions we carry within us: our desire to belong while remaining wholly ourselves, our search for certainty in a world that rarely offers it, and the ways identity continues to shift as we move through experience. Much of my work lives in these in-between spaces, where definitions soften and something less easily named begins to emerge.
I began my creative journey through poetry, using words to understand emotion, identity, relationships, change, and the shifting sense of self that comes with different phases of life. That journey led me to self-publish my poetry collection, Midlife Roller Coaster, which grew out of a period of personal transformation and the reflections that emerged from it.
Painting eventually became another language for the same inquiry. Where words ask me to articulate an experience, paint allows me to remain within its ambiguity. Through colour, texture, light, symbolism, and visual narrative, I explore what is sensed before it is fully understood... the emotions, memories, questions, and inner experiences that often exist beyond language.
My work is deeply influenced by vivid dreams, nature and symbolic imagery. Animals, human figures, oceans, landscapes, familiar objects and various pattens and textures often appear not simply as subjects, but as metaphors for internal states. I am drawn to the point where realism begins to give way to abstraction, allowing something recognizable to coexist with something intuitive and imagined. Working across oil, acrylic and mixed media gives me the freedom to build layers, textures, create movement and allow parts of the image to emerge while others dissolve.
I return repeatedly to ideas of identity, belonging, freedom, transformation and becoming. I am interested less in providing answers than in holding space for questions: Who are we beneath the identities we inherit? How much of ourselves is shaped by our environments? What do we surrender in order to be accepted? Can a sense of autonomy and belonging exist together? And how do we make peace with the parts of life, and ourselves, that want certainty but rarely receives it?
For me, art is a way of making an inner experience visible without having to fully explain it. I want my paintings to leave enough openness for viewers to encounter their own memories, emotions and interpretations within them. The meaning I bring to a work is only its beginning; what someone else recognizes in it becomes part of its life.
In essence, my art is an exploration of the spaces between things.. between what we see and what we feel, what we know and what we cannot know, where we belong and where we remain entirely our own. And perhaps, somewhere within those spaces, we begin to understand a little more of what it means to become ourselves.
